Vari Rice or Barnyard Millet

Vari Rice, Bhagar or barnyard millet are tiny, whitish and round grains which are usually consumed in India during fast. Few other common names for vari rice are varandul, bhagar, samo and moriyo. Though they don't belong to the rice family and are from the millet family; yet vari rice is considered to be an healthy alternative for the rice. They are also a healthy alternative for sago or saboodana when prepared during fast. Like any other millet, vari rice are starchy and have low carbohydrate content. They are also a good source for B-Complex vitamins. Patients with gluten intolerance (celiac disease) can safely consume barnyard millet as they are gluten free.
